Our Summer House with African Tablescape

I live in the beautiful Puget Sound region on a wondrous island west of Seattle. I am fortunate to live on five serene acres of soaring hemlocks and cedar trees. There is a quiet stream that meanders towards the sound, native salal bushes abound along with the ubiquitous native sword ferns all around. Since so much is wooded we unfortunately have mosquitoes which also enjoy the property. In order to enjoy dinners outside, we purchased a large 10×15 tent with net side curtains.

Summer House

The family felt it was like an African safari Serengetti tent. Because I love to play with props and stage a setting with ambiance and panache, I purchased cheesecloth by the yard and draped the ceiling with “mosquito netting.” Most serendipitously I  happily found at garage sales some animal print fabric for the table, a zebra- headed box which I keep matches in, and funky green balls for decoration. There was enough of the animal print fabric to cover the chair cushions too.  I recently spied some fallen red berries from a Kousa dogwood tree so I included them as well. With fairy lights on the ceiling along with some candles, it is a magical place to be on our glorious summer evenings.
